In March 2024, I had the pleasure of serving as an artist-in-residence at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. Situated in far western Nebraska, the park showcases the rugged high plains; grasslands, rocky buttes, and endless skies dominate the scene. During my two weeks in the park, I hiked the trails, walked aimlessly across the grasslands, scrambled up the buttes, and strolled along the meandering Niobrara River. It rained, it snowed; I saw eagles and geese and meadowlarks; I witnessed the incredibly dark skies with the Milky Way high over head. Although Agate Fossil Beds is a small park, there is something special about standing alone on a grassy hill and listening to the birds and the wind.
